Overview/Goals:
This 6-hour session introduces participants to the use of Digital Storytelling in many ways, from introducing new material to helping students learn to conduct research, synthesize large amounts of content and gain expertise in the use of digital communication and authoring tools. It also can help students organize these ideas as they learn to create stories for an audience, and present their ideas and knowledge in an individual and meaningful way. Participants will develop a digital story they can use with their students, lesson integration plans, and ways for students to use digital stories.


Session Objectives:
  1. Participants will understand benefits of Digital StoryTelling to student learning.
  2. Participants will identify digital storytelling techniques.
  3. Using specified software, participants will create a Digital Story correlated to state and district frameworks.
  4. Participants will develop a lesson plan for a current or future lesson utilizing Digital Storytelling with students.
  5. To demonstrate comprehension participants will share strategies developed and products prepared with the group.
  6. To discuss how students can prepare Digital Stories on what they have learned.

8:30 – 9:00 - Introductions and brainstorming
Discuss goals and objectives for session.
Introduce Digital Storytelling using the following sites:

Brainstorm just a few minutes with participants on ways to use digital storytelling in their classrooms.


9:00 – 9:30 - Independent work
From the links provided in the agenda participants will look at various links concerning digital storytelling providing examples.


9:30 – 10:00 - Independent: locating photos and other resources
Create a new folder in My Documents with their last name. All files created today will be saved into this folder.

Look online for images. Discuss copyright issues.


10:00 – 10:15 – BREAK

10:15 – 10:45 - Whole group: getting started with the online Movie Maker tutorial
Discuss briefly how using digital storytelling techniques can impact classroom learning (engaged students, relevancy to real-world settings—tv/video, student products show body of knowledge gained …).

For this session, we will use Movie Maker to create video from still photos or video clips located online and downloaded (no camera available to connect).
The first thing they will do is import clips from their folder.


10:45 – 12:30 - Independent work: create the Digital Story
Participants will use the tutorial to learn to use Movie Maker while creating their instructional product. Microphones are available and everyone will need to be aware that recording will be going on throughout the remainder of the session. They can always return and edit (so that all are not wanting/needing microphones at same time.) They will include titles, transitions, narrations, and credits.

After they have worked for some time, stop and discuss saving vs. publishing. Depending on the graphics they use, the video files maybe rather large. Some email providers have file size limits for attachments. Encourage them to save and publish Encourage participants to publish—the process can run in the background while they are working on the lesson plan in the next step.


12:30 – 1:00 – LUNCH

1:00 – 1:15 - Whole group: lesson plan overview
Prepare a lesson plan for using the instructional video and integration strategies for student creation of digital storytelling projects. These can be combined but the activities must be relevant to the identified frameworks.


1:15 – 2:30 - Independent work: create the lesson plan
Participants should develop their lesson plan(s). They should create any student worksheets, instructional materials, templates, etc. with the lesson plan. The saved document will be emailed to their preferred account or saved on a travel drive if available. Encourage them to prepare more than one lesson and/or work with teachers of other disciplines to include interdisciplinary activities for students.


2:30 – 2:45 – BREAK

2:45 – 3:15 - Post session Assessments
Guide participants in discussion of goals of session: … How will the integration of digital storytelling benefit learning and support their instruction? Guide participants in discussion of goals of session: … How will the integration of digital storytelling allow students to share what they have learned? Have them share what they created and how they will use with students.

3:15 – 3:30 - Closing
  • Attendance forms, evaluations
  • Participants should take printed materials.
  • All files and folders created on the computer should be emailed or saved on portable media and deleted from the computers.


A Step-By-Step Approach to Creating a Digital Story
from Materials Found On the Web

PART ONE: Define, Collect, Decide
  1. Select a topic for your digital story.
  2. Create a folder on the desktop where you can store the materials you find.
  3. Search for image resources for your story, including: pictures, drawings, photographs, maps, charts, etc. -Save these resources in your folder.
  4. Try to locate audio resources such as music, speeches, interviews, and sound effects.
    -Save these resources in your folder.
  5. Try to find informational content, which might come from web sites, word processed documents, or PowerPoint slides. -Save these resources in your folder.
  6. Begin thinking of the purpose of your story. Are you trying to inform, convince, provoke, question?
PART TWO: Select, Import, Create
  1. Select the images you would like to use for your digital story.
  2. Select the audio you would like to use for your digital story.
  3. Select the content and text you would like to use for your digital story.
  4. Import images.
  5. Import audio.
  6. Modify number of images and/or image order, if necessary.
PART THREE: Decide, Write, Record, Finalize
  1. Decide on the purpose and point of view of your digital story.
  2. Write a script that will be used as narration in your digital story AND provides the purpose and point of view you have chosen.
  3. Use a computer microphone and record the narration of your script.
  4. Import the narration.
  5. Finalize your digital story.
PART FOUR: Demonstrate, Evaluate, Replicate
  1. Show your digital story to your colleagues.
  2. Gather feedback about how the story could be improved, expanded, and used in your classroom.
  3. Teach a colleague how to create their own digital story.
