Day One

We started the evening with introductions and then George shared a video with Bill Cosby and a lady from North, South Carolina. It was a great video.

Lori and Jill shared an elementary common core wikispaces page developed to help all teachers with the common core standards and linking to technologyl Great job girls! Link is here. More from them. Apps are ezmathcore and ezlanguagecore that are helpful. They have the common core standards for teachers.

Then we split into 3 groups (nerds, geeks, and dorks) Such fun with the cadre groups! My group learned more about edmodo with David Henderson. What an awesome free tool. I've heard about but never had the chance to spend some time with it. Very, very facebook like but in a controlled atmosphere. Paula Mooty shared her edmodo classroom group so that we could share how she sets it for a class, posting assigments, etc. Very, very cool. Can't wait to get back and share with my district. I see many possibilities. It's free to sign up for students and teachers.

Phoebe arrived and shared information about the future of TIE. We are thinking positive thoughts that the funding will be found to keep this great group of Arkansas educators together.

Day Two

Common Core with Phoebe. It is really heavy in technology and alot came from the national educational technology plan. Technology is so critical to common core. Set up a google alert for the "common core state standards" (Go to and set up your email and key phrase) Frequent these websites (unauthorized common core location where resources are located) (testing site and you can sign up for updates)

Students need technology skills and are going to have showcase that they have those skills and not just have knowledge. Common core is also allowed administrators to realize that technology people have a two-fold role in that they will have to technical skill set as well as be integration specialist.

What Does Skill Based Technology Look Like. It's student centered, uses a variety of technology tools, sequential in complexity, has "real world" look and feel, and is standards-based in both content and delivery. My philosophy for years - what's best for students?!!!

PARCC - Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers. New assessments will be ready for 2014-2015. We are a governing state in Arkansas. We are a pilot school. We are possibly going to be testing spring semester of 2012. We can't wait. We must be ready. 25 states in the pilot program. Unofficial site has all of these powerpoints to use and share with your faculty, administration, and staff. We are not alone. We are with 24 other states. We won't have one testing window. There will be several testing windows. Through-course assessments. They will be computer based platforms. They should be able to prepare outlines and capture notes as they write their essay.Use digital technologies to assess hard-to-measure skills.

Read passages and they will have to drag and drop to put things in their proper place.Highlighting text. Very similar tests but it will be technology based and on the computer. Students must use these skills all day every day in order to be ready for the test.

Final Updates: PARCC will offer technology audits to assess out technology levels at the state level. The state will then help districts. Interweaving of technology in CCSS critical. You may not know how to do all pieces. Don't be afraid to ask students how to make it best work. The adoption of CCSS was quick but the implementation will take time.

Coops are working on a mapping project. There are curriculum maps out there now with lessons attached to them. Coops are now writing additional lessons and are putting technology pieces embedded in those.

Breakout Session - Harry and Schoology

It is a free learning management or lesson management system. You have a variety of options and settings to control what teachers can and cannot do. Students can quiz. There is also a dropbox feature.

He uploaded all of the people from TIE in about two minutes.

There is also a parent side. There is an app for **schoology**. Once again a very facebook feel to it. Going to check to see if you can import quizzes into the program. Very interactive and intuitive. It does QR code assignments. The only thing that costs is if you want to change schoology off of the top left and put your name. You have to get a quote. Calendar feature.

They are going to be expected to do alot of performance type assessments. Moving things on the screen. Creating projects based on information and traveling to several web sites. She's included various links and sources that will do many of the things they will be asked to do on the test such as a online spinner, as well as a project based activity link including making a word document, create a table, create a pie chart.

Created wikispace page so that each time the page is used for a workshop, data can be uploaded and shared and useful information for future uses of the page.

Michael Graham for common core math for secondary school teachers (CCSS)

Testing will be on computers and you will have to go out to the internet and create documents and upload them. Teachers will have to know how to do these things so that students can do them. Web page developed for our use for this. Internet sources, smarter balance technology enhanced assessments. He recommends google docs for alot of the work because it's available to students.

Here is a QR code generator if you want to create a QR code for your web page. So easy to use. Here is another qr code maker where you can do colored codes. If you have a web page that is particularly long, you might want to use an url shortener because the longer the web address, the more specks the code has and it becomes harder to read.

Part of his module reviews how to check to make sure a website is valid. Then reviews how to use google docs. Url shorteners. Create the pamphlet or brochure using templates. There are brochures and pamphlets out there on google docs available in the templates.

George Lieux went to the Mobile Learning conference in Phoenix, Arizona. Registration was $995 but it included your hotel, food, and registration. Mobile learning does not mean you give the kids a tool and use it. It means take the tool and go outside everywhere and use it. The session I enjoyed the most was presented by Travis Allen. In college the only tool he uses is his ipad. he uses a flash card app to take notes in some of his classes. Does it real time instead of converting the notes later. The whole concept of 24/7 is how learning has to be. One lady watched the blog and she leaarned as much through the blog as being there. Too Cool!!! Netbooks are doorstops because they are not mobile. Alot of presenters at the workshop were very radical. All of there 5/6 graders have ipods in the classroom. they allowed students to bring in their own ipod touches. they had to install the mobocip which filters the ipod. its a $4.99 app. Here's the link.

Distance Learning update. Synchronous and Asynchronous teaching and learning. Video to explain how the teaching is different. Video showed Mr. Hogue the art teachers doing a distance learning class and the students production in the classroom as he was teaching.Then went to Ms. Bassett teaching spanish and showing her students.

George Lieux on Moodle. Free, open source software but it includes ads. You have to pay in order to turn those ads off. QR code link that demo's a livebinder. Moodle people are very generous. There is no need to have clickers if you have moodle and everyone has a computer. You can group students so that students don't realize that they are in a special group so you can individualize instruction. You can embed tons of things into moodle. His site is here.

We discussed issuu a bit that will make pdf's into beautiful books. Rachel mentioned flipsnack which will do something very similar.

David Henderson shared the **Arkansas Digital Sandbox** which is formerly known as VRSpot. Everyone in the state of Arkansas has a login.

Aretha shared what she shared at tical for administrators what tools can be used to help with technology. She shared the dynamic of the changing nature of the classroom. Through technology and 1:1 computing, we want an interactive classroom. How excited are you kids about going to class? with the right 2.0 tools students can be engaged and learning.

web 2.0 tools she shared penzu (taking notes - she uses it for bellwork) (she also uses it to assign students to be a notetaker and they take notes for those students that are absent and they email the notes to the absent student) (you can also use it to store notes for a conference as well), students create web pages (blogs and she says the blogging comments pick up when she adds a blog comment at night), alot of these activities help students and teachers think outside of the box, students could also do some peer editing of each other's web pages, **animoto**, from Berry's World comic that says "He didn't publish, so he perished.", shared an animoto presentation to show they knew more about the book than just what the bookcover said about it, photostory example, **storybird**, ****build your wild self****, mapping tools including **cacoo**, (great for ms), **** (great for elementary), and then ****mindmeister**** (great for high school), (you can only have 3 mindmeister walls at one time), **wallwisher** (possible uses as an entrance slip, exit slip, or for bellwork), **glogster**, **newseum** (great bell work activity brochures (create one about the year they were born), and newspapers.

Harry Dickens talks about digital natives. The book called Teaching Digital Natives by Mark Prensky. He used the ****keynote app**** to run the presentation from his ipad to the projector. Highlights from the book include - adults must counterbalance, physical acts of going to get books compared to all books stored on your ipad, 25 (how much time kids spend doing something with technology - 25% of their time), kids want instantaneous access to information, DSL versus DFL (Digital First Language versus Digital Second Language, What Makes Learning Real?, Learning should be real and not just relevant, we must make our subjects real, creating digital tours using QR codes around your school and/or city, cspan you can create digital tours, has an app and you can use that app to study a historical person. ****fakebook**** is another application that lets you do things similar, **nasa's smart skies** where the students have to be air traffic controllers, **** where they are doing world wide experiments where they create the data for real scientists to use, knowing when to use the appropriate nouns and verbs, aggregation tools, active review tools, animation tools, big think tools, brainstorming tools (i brainstorm), collaboration tools, comic creation tools, (comic life) (strip design), comparison generators, comparative shopping tools (qr tools), crowdsourcing, data acquisition, factor analysis, note-taking tools (noteshelf app), rapid serial visual presentation (rsvp) (young reader app) (teleprompt+ app) (prompterous app) these apps will increase reading skills and speeds, role play tools, (puppet pals app)

Intel also has tons of FREE resources and many sessions that you can go and attend. One is on project based learning. There is an essentials course (become a trainer of trainers) create a unit with technology in every part of it. One drawback is that it can be very intense. It is not a beginning technology course. There are also other FREE tools to use without doing one of the training courses. One is the visual ranking tool (thinking tools) The nexxt course is an elements course. One is called project based approaches. There is an action plan within the module to create your project. Intel teach elements. Also have a collaboration in the digital classroom.

TIE module on the arkansas digital sandbox. Probably will roll this out as a 6 hour module which includes the sandbox, itunesu, and arkansas ideas with 2 hours devoted to each of those items.
